Single Of The Week!
P!NK - 'TROUBLE'
PinkYou have GOT to love a pop song that rocks this hard. P!nk clearly knows that the key to any top notch good-time racket is a beat so strong, hard and fast it literally shakes you into jumping up and down with glee, even if you don't want to. Granted, this is old skool power-pop like Oxford University is an old school, erm, school. But if you're gonna stroke your chin rather than shake your ass to songs like this, you don't known how to par-TAY in any case. Put it on and your house be rocking. 'Sall you need to know.

HOLLY VALANCE - 'STATE OF MIND'
Holly ValanceAnyone remember Republica? They did this kind of tinny pop/rock/dance thing - imagine the Prodigy doing Kylie, without the tunes - and so obsessed with seeming 'street' they were out of date before their records even hit the shops. Holly's producers clearly remember Republica, and boy do they want us to too. The dance beats don't make you wanna dance, the pop tune has no fizz and the rock bits don't rock. Time to kiss kiss off now, Hol, your time's up...

ATOMIC KITTEN - 'IF YOU COME TO ME'
Liz KittenWhen we spoke to Liz a couple of weeks ago, she said the Kittens very firmly believe that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." when it comes to music. So, if you've heard 'Whole Again', and 'Eternal Flame', you've a pretty good idea of what to expect. There's a slightly-too-loud hip hop beat, tinkly pianos and a gospel-inspired melody soaked in angelic harmonies. Were this the first time the Kittens had made this sound, it'd be amazing. But it's not. This is absolutely the LAST time you can get away with this, girls...

KYM MARSH - 'SENTIMENTAL'
Kym MarshIt would be fair to say that Kym has been cocking an ear to Avril Lavigne in preparation for this song. There's a lot of vocabulary crammed into small spaces. Acoustic guitars sparkle prettily before being swamped by a tasteful version of ugly rock noise. And Kym attempts to get her voice to soar over the top of everything, like Avril's at the end of 'I'm With You'. Sadly it all seems a bit safe, a bit nice and a bit...well...dull to lodge in the brain.

PHIXX - 'HOLD ON TO ME'
PhixxThis could not be more '80s if it were drinking Quatro from a He-Man flask and carrying a mobile phone the size of a breeze-block. Luckily that's no bad thing just at the minute. Having said that, rinky-dink synthpop with a five-man choir over the top would deflate like a souffle in a hoover if there wasn't a cracking pop tune to hang it on, which there is. After a couple of plays you won't be able to get it out of your immaculately-sculptured spiky head, even if someone whacks it with a filofax.

ELBOW - 'FUGITIVE MOTEL'
ElbowCards on the table time. Since they released their second album 'Cast of Thousands' we've become huge 'Bow fans here at the Pops. This is a more reflective, soaring affair than their last single 'Fallen Angels', and it's truly a wondrous thing. The album version is longer and therefore better, as this really isn't the kind of song you want to rush. Put it on if you're down in the dumps and have a good old wallow, you won't regret it.

KELIS - 'MILKSHAKE'
Kelis In which a filthy, filthy synthesizer makes elephant noises over a slapped congo and the odd finger cymbal, and Kelis does her best Missy Elliott impression. The best thing about this record is the surly attitude, where Kel acts as if she gives not one hoot whether you even hear the song, let along like it. And there will be just as many people who cannot bear this as there are who love it. We were too busy jigging about the Pops office to make our minds up, which has to be a good sign

Stinker Of The Week!
DAVID SNEDDON - 'BABY GET HIGHER'
Sneds Crikey, is he still here? Now that this year's Fame Academy is over and we have Alex Parks to soothe us with her melodious tones, can we finally admit that the last thing anyone needed from a reality TV pop show was a diet-Robbie Williams? David has yet to display any of the charm of his primary influence, and with songs as average as this, a few of Rob's tunes wouldn't go amiss either. He needed to come back with a can't-be-ignored, smash-you-over-the-head, thrill-a-minute rocket ride of a song to keep our interest at this late stage in the game, and this really isn't it. Bye, Dave, nice knowing ya!
